DRESSING FOR RECESS As we move into spring (we hope), the weather is sometimes very unpredictable- warm one day and cold the next. Students need to come to school dressed in clothing that will keep them warm outside whatever weather the day may bring. Layering clothes helps.
BOX TOPS Thanks for your help as you clip Box Tops for Education and send them in to the State St. School. Continue collecting for us. We do continue this collection all year, so talk with friends, neighbors and relatives and have them start clipping for us.
JARROD JOY COMPETES IN THE MAINE GEOGRAPHY BEE The top scoring 100 students in Maine competed recently at the University of Southern Maine in the State Geographic Bee. Jarrod Joy, a fifth grader in Mr. Levesque's classroom, represented the State St School at this event. We are very proud of Jarrod. He represented us well!
MANY THANKS TO THE PTU FOR THE RECENT MOVIE NIGHT Families gathered at the Brewer Middle School to enjoy a special movie night recently. Thanks to the parents for organizing the event.
CLASS PLACEMENTS Parents have called recently to inquire about class placements for the upcoming school year. On Friday, April 11th, a letter and a form will come home with your children. This gives parents an opportunity to share information with the school that helps us know about your child(ren)'s learning style. This form needs to be returned by May 9th. Many factors are taken into consideration when placing children for next year, but balancing classrooms is important to the success of every student and classroom.
AUTHOR'S DAY AT STATE ST SCHOOL Coming in May will be Robert Pottle, local children's author and storyteller. Mr. Pottle will visit all three elementary schools throughout the week of May 19th. More details will follow in the May newsletter.
BOOK FAIR GREAT SUCCESS The Book Fair held last week at the State St. School was very successful according to organizer Mrs. Linda Webb, our school secretary. Thank you to all parents, staff members and volunteers who helped. Teachers will use the proceeds from the fair to purchase books to support the curriculum and the work they do in the classroom with our students.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL We have had several calls inquiring about the date of the last day of school. Maine students must attend school for a minimum 175 days. Having used more days as snow days this year thus far, the last student day of the year will be June 23rd. If we should have any other weather related days off, additional days will be added.
CAID CUMMINGS WINS STATE HANDWRITING CONTEST State St. School students have been working hard this year on their cursive writing. We recently entered the 17th annual Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. The state winners were chosen from more then 177,000 entries representing grades one through eight. Caid's handwriting sample will represent grade four handwriting for the state of Maine in the national contest. We are very proud of Caid and our students as they take pride in their handwriting. Applause for our teachers who play a major role in setting high expectations for student handwriting. Caid is a student in Rhonda Geaghan's fourth grade classroom. Many thanks to Mrs. Nordfors for her leadership in bringing this event to our school.
CONGRATULATIONS Ms. Taylor's fourth graders recently participated in Read to Feed, a program that purchases animals for families in need. Students read a total of 130 books (13,000 pages) and raised $465.00 to purchase a water buffalo, goat, chicks, and rabbits. We are very proud of their efforts as they demonstrate our Community of Caring values. |
