Brewer Youth Theatre

Brewer Youth Theatre is the cooperative drama program for students in Grades 6-12 in Brewer. Established in 1998, BYT has presented over sixty productions from one-act plays to musicals and radio dramas. This unique program gives students at each level a chance to perform with their peers, as well as in several combined efforts. Brewer High School students compete in the Maine Drama Festival each year and in three of the last six years they have advanced to the State Finals. Brewer Middle School students perform their own show and this year will present two one act plays. Students from both schools were involved in last year's musical comedy Wonderful Town and the radio dramas Dracula and The Haunted Balcony. Brewer Youth Theatre was selected in 2006 as one of the nation's most outstanding drama programs, earning an invitation to perform at the International Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The great variety of productions and the large number of shows performed each year gives Brewer students the opportunity to gain a level of experience unmatched in the area. BYT has also established a strong relationship with Penobscot Theatre Company, giving several of our students the chance to add to their resume and work with professionals from around the country.

During the 2007-2008 school year BYT will present another wide array of shows, starting with a night of 1940's radio leading up to Halloween. In November our high school actors will perform the classic comedy You Can't Take It With You and then begin work on Pulitzer Prize Winner Lanford Wilson's The Rimers of Eldritch. Winter will also see a pair of middle school one act plays and the high school entry in the Maine Drama Festival, followed by the spring musical involving students from both schools.

MY FAVORITE YEAR
Brewer Youth Theatre's Spring Musical
Middle School Auditorium

MY FAVORITE YEAR is the story of Bejny Stone, a young writer on a 1950s network television variety show, the Comedy Cavalcade. Stone is given the task of keeping the guest star, washed-up swashbuckling actor Alan Swann, out of trouble. As his career has faded, Swann's off-screen behaviors have garnered more publicity than his acting, and Benjy has his hands full keeping him on the straight and narrow.

Along the way we meet Benjy's two families, his mother Belle and step-father, former bantamweight boxer Rookie Carroca, his eccentric Uncle Morty and Aunt Sadie, and his work family, the writers, producers, cast and crew of the Comedy Cavalcade, including the host, King Kaiser.

The show features lots of great music, plenty of laughs, swordfights, pies in the face, and more than a few surprises. There are some adult situations and mature language, so it may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for students and the doors will open at 6:30 each night, with performances at 7:00 p.m.
