The mission of Health Services is to protect and improve the health of all students in a safe and nurturing environment. Our goal is to help prepare students to become self-motivated and responsible for improving and maintaining their health, preventing disease, and reducing health-related risk behaviors.

Brewer High School supports the health of students by having a full-time registered nurse at the high school during regular school hours. The nurse’s primary role is to remove health related barriers to learning, advocate for the child’s health, and to collaborate with families, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, physicians, and social agencies to provide a vital link between home and school to ensure that all students achieve their potential.

Schools are required by State of Maine law to maintain individual health records. School nursing practice laws require that all health information about a student be kept confidential and should not be shared with other school personnel without specific permission from a parent/guardian.

Health Services include:

* Maintaining health/immunization records of students in compliance with Maine law.
* Assisting families in connecting with health/medical resources in the community.
* Providing first aid care and emergency services during the school day.
* Providing 9th grade students with vision screenings. Screening is available to all students upon request.

School Medication Policy
In order for prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications, including asthma inhalers and epipens to be given during school hours, written permission from the healthcare provider and the parent/guardian is required. Medication permission forms are available from the school nurse.
