SUMMER ACTIVITIES:

All golfers are asked to see Coach Gillies at the Traditions Golf Course and Learning Center at some point this spring or summer to set up a meeting with him and discuss their summer training plan.

Coach Gillies is available at Traditions most Monday's through Saturday's, and even some Sunday's. Please stop out to see Coach or call and set up an appointment to see him at 989-9909.

BREWER HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM POLICIES

TEAM PHILOSOPHY

Every member of the golf team should display a positive attitude, enthusiasm for the sport, a willingness to learn, dedication to their team and a respect for the traditions and history of the sport. Players will be instructed on a daily basis on their golf technique, their knowledge of the rules of the sport and an understanding of the long standing traditions that govern the game.

At the high school level, only six players can participate in varsity matches. A match will consist of six Brewer players playing a match against six players from an opposing school. This means that as many as 18 to 20 players on our team will not participate in any given match. As coaches we will strive to work with the entire team on a regular basis as much as time allows and will ensure that sub varsity matches will be set up to allow all players on the team the opportunity to play in matches. We are well aware as coaches that we’re involved in a competitive environment and will make every effort to be successful as far as wins and losses are concerned while representing our family, school and community. An equally important goal however, is to foster a love for a sport that can be played for a lifetime. A majority of players who have participated on our teams in the past continue to play the game as young adults and value greatly the positive exposure they had to the game while in high school.

EXPECTATIONS AND TEAM RULES

1. Players are expected to place class work ahead of all other school activities and will be encouraged to excel in the classroom at their highest levels. If a player’s participation on the golf team negatively affects his or her work in the classroom, players should approach the coaches to determine what can be done to remedy the situation immediately.

2. Family commitments will take precedence over golf activities.

3. Unless an excused absence is obtained from the coaching staff in advance, all players are expected to attend every practice or team activity. Players not attending school for any reason will not be allowed to attend practice on that day.

4. Players are expected to arrive at the assigned starting time for team activities and participate in every activity with enthusiasm, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn that will help in the development of their respective skill levels.

5. Players are expected to take care of the golf course in a manner that is consistent with the traditions of the game and dress appropriately while at the golf course. These issues will be covered with each member of the team on the first day of practice to ensure the team’s behavior will not negatively impact other players on the golf course.

6. Players are expected to play by the rules and turn in scores and results that are honest and accurate. Anything less will not be tolerated. Players who do not turn in honest scores will not participate in any team matches. When participating in matches our team will be expected to play by the rules and win or lose are expected to turn in scores that are an accurate and honest result from their individual match.

7. Each player on the team at both varsity and sub varsity levels will be expected to have a team shirt and a pair of khaki pants or shorts and be dressed in their team uniform for all matches. Players are not required to wear uniforms for practice but must be dressed in suitable golf attire. Golf shoes are optional. Every player must have his or her own set of golf clubs.

8. High School golf is a team event. The goals of the team will always come before the goals and accomplishments of any individual. Individual success will be rewarded in regional and state competitions at the conclusion of the season.

9. Profanity, inappropriate behavior or poor sportsmanship by any team members will not be tolerated.

10. The team members participating in matches will be required to travel to and from the match on the team bus. This approach fosters a team first mentality that we encourage on an ongoing basis throughout the season.

11. Individuals will be selected to compete in both varsity and sub varsity matches by the coaching staff based on a number of criteria. These include but are not limited to each player’s skill level at the time of each match, their commitment to improvement throughout the season, a positive attitude as well as their dedication to the team’s improvement at each practice.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Players are encouraged to communicate with coaches regarding any issues relevant to the team or the individual’s participation on the team. Players are encouraged to advocate for themselves.

Parents are welcome to communicate with coaches either in person, by phone during normal business hours or by email.

At the outset of the season, an email list will be compiled separately for players and for parents. Coaches will email on a regular basis to ensure everyone is made aware of team activities throughout the season. I will respond to emails as quickly as I can to keep lines of communication open.

Season schedules will be established prior to the start of each season. However, additional sub varsity matches as well as post season matches may be added throughout the season. Coaches will make every effort to keep everyone informed as to these changes as they are finalized.

At the outset of the season players will be made aware of the criteria that will be used to determine what is required to earn their varsity letter in golf.

REQUIREMENTS TO EARN A LETTER

Players who participate in at least half of the regular season varsity matches will earn a letter.

If the team qualifies to participate in the KVAC North Division Playoffs, all members of the playoff roster will earn their letter.

If the team qualifies to participate in the State Team Championship, all members of the State team roster will earn their letter.

If a player qualifies to participate in the Individual State Championship, he or she will earn their letter.

A positive team oriented attitude as well as an understanding and adherence to the rules and etiquette of the game will be required of all players to earn their letter.

A willingness to invest significant personal time in skill development both during the off season as well as during the high school golf season.

A demonstrated understanding of the rules and etiquette of the game and a willingness to play within the rules at all times.

A demonstrated level of sportsmanship and respect for opposing players as well as for the traditions of the game itself.

In addition to the criteria listed above to earn a letter, players must demonstrate a commitment to the Brewer High School Golf Team through their regular attendance and participation at practice as well as demonstrating a serious commitment to improving their own as well as the team’s performance.

Coaches always reserve the right to award letters to those players who have shown a serious commitment to their own improvement as well as that of their team, who was an very integral part of the team roster in any number of ways but who may not have attained a skill level to compete at the highest levels.
