In the spring of 2017, the Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee was presented with a sponsorship opportunity by Richard "Dick" Varney. Dick was reading through the Hall of Fame by-laws and came across a section near the end that read:
The committee will seek an annual sponsor to cover the costs of the Athletics Hall of Fame, including the plaques, banquet and upkeep of the Hall of Fame board located at the high school.
The initial year sponsorship amount is $2,000 with an annual agreement of $1,000 each preceding year.
The Hall of Fame can be named “The Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame; sponsored by ___________” if the donor wishes to have naming rights.
It was then that Mr. Varney approached chairperson, David Utterback. With unanimous support from the committee, the Athletic Hall of Fame and Richard & Donna Corey Varney became financial partners at a cost of $2,000 for the first year with a payment of $1,000 to be made each preceeding year. Furthermore, it was agreed that the Corey-Varney's would leave a gift of $25,000 in their estate to be directed to the Brewer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mr. Varney presented this news to his wife, Donna as a birthday gift in 2017.
Richard Varney and Donna Corey met while students at Brewer High School. Dick, a Class of 1959 graduate, and Donna, of the Class of 1961, married soon after Donna's graduation. Both were Salutatorians of their respective classes at Brewer High School. Dick played basketball for the Witches who were coached by BHS Hall of Famer, Larry Mahaney. Donna was a football and basketball cheerleader for the Witches.
The Hall of Fame is of significant importance to both Richard and Donna. According to Richard Varney, "[we] are pleased to sponsor the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame." He added, "[We] feel that it is an appropriate way to honor the exceptional BHS student-athletes for their accomplishments."
Donna's father and brother were inducted into the Hall of Fame in the third class, the Class of 2016. Her father, Shirley "Slip" Corey was a longtime coach and community advocate for youth athletics in Brewer. Her brother, Dana Corey, was an outstanding athlete at Brewer High School and is still a coach for Brewer High School.
This partnership ensures the financial stability of this project for decades to come and allows the Corey Varney's to leave a lasting legacy to the school they, and their families, love dearly.
