School Health and Wellness

WHAT IS SCHOOL HEALTH?

  • A healthful environment,

  • Nursing and other health services that students need to stay in school,

  • Nutritious and appealing school meals,

  • Opportunities for physical activity that include physical education,

  • Health education that covers a range of developmentally appropriate topics taught by knowledgeable teachers, and

  • Counseling, psychological and social services that promote healthy social and emotional development and remove barriers to students’ learning.

STAFF AND STUDENT WELLNESS

Student and Staff health and wellness are related to physical and psychological well-being and readiness to learn. We are committed to providing a healthy school environment that supports student and staff wellness, healthy food choices, nutrition education, physical education and regular physical activity.

The Brewer School Department takes part in the 5210 Let’s Go! Program which encourages healthy behaviors for students, families and staff.

  • 5 or more fruits / veggies per day

  • 2 hours or less of recreational screen time

  • 1 hour or more of physical activity

  • 0 sugary drinks (more milk, water)

The Brewer School Department Wellness Team serves as an advisory committee regarding student and staff wellness issues and is made up of teachers, administrators, parents, community members, nurses, guidance counselors. nutrition services and any other interested parties. The Wellness Team meets monthly and is always looking for new ideas.

The Wellness Team has helped revise the Tobacco Policy and the Wellness Policy and has supported the health and wellness of the staff and students in the following ways:

  • Nutrition Education for PreK through 3rd grade classes “Pick a Better Snack and Act”

  • Tobacco Education for 4th and 5th grade Tar Wars

  • Bike and Pedestrian Education from the Bike Coalition for 4th graders

  • Dental Education in PreK through 2

  • Prime For Life substance abuse education for 8th grade

  • 5210 Program 

  • Play Equipment for Playgrounds

  • Merit activities involving physical activity

School Medication Policy
In order for prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications, including asthma inhalers and epipens to be given during school hours, written permission from the healthcare provider and the parent/guardian is required. Medication permission forms are available from the school nurse or may be downloaded below.
